New Building Safety Regulations for Second Staircases

We are pleased to share the following annoucement from Secretary of State, Michael Gove.

In a written statement on the UK Parliament website, Secretary of State Michael Gove has confirmed that there will be a 30-month period during which new Building Regulations applications can conform to either the existing or updated requirements for second staircases in new residential buildings in England above 18m.

Reflecting the opinions of the National Fire Chiefs Council and the Royal Institute of British Architects, among others, the new regulations align the UK with international countries such as Hong Kong and the UAE, which have a reasonable threshold for mandating a second staircase.

Further announcements are expected soon, with updates to the design of details that will go into Approved Document B.
