Once a safety net has reached the end of its useful life, either due to failing a UV Test or because the net is simply uneconomical to repair, the net must be withdrawn from service.
To ensure that safety nets do not continue to be used beyond their safe life, the FASET Health Safety and Technical Committee have agreed the following procedure for their removal from service.
- All identifying marks and tags shall be removed and destroyed. This includes Manufacturer’s labels, test tags, repair tags and all remaining test meshes, along with their serial numbered tags.
- The Border Rope shall be removed from the perimeter of the net. As the rope in Type S nets is 30kN rope, if the rope remains serviceable, this can be re-used as tie ropes, subject to visual inspection.
- The remaining net may be disposed of through proper waste disposal procedures, re-cycled for its raw material, or alternative uses can be found e.g. skip coverings etc. FASET suggest that a check be made on the net to ensure no contamination remains that could be detrimental to the further use of the net.
- The Safety Net must be removed from the company’s net log.
