The National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) has launched a new safety campaign, Don't Fall for Fragile – Step Back & Plan, aimed at reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries caused by falls through fragile roofs and rooflights.
Falls through fragile surfaces remain one of the most significant risks when working at height. Many incidents occur because roofs or rooflights that appear safe are, in fact, unable to support a person's weight. The campaign encourages everyone involved in roof work—including clients, designers, contractors and building owners—to identify these risks early, plan work properly and ensure appropriate control measures are in place before work begins.
The campaign reinforces a simple but important message: effective planning and competent decision-making are essential to preventing falls from height. By challenging assumptions about roof safety and promoting a proactive approach to risk management, NFRC hopes to drive lasting improvements across the industry.
These principles closely align with FASET's commitment to promoting competence, safe systems of work and best practice in temporary safety systems. Ensuring suitable fall protection is in place—and recognising that every roof should be treated as potentially fragile until proven otherwise—remains fundamental to protecting those working at height.
FASET encourages members and the wider industry to explore the campaign and consider how its guidance can be applied to their own planning and site practices.
