Tagging of Safety Net Repairs and Periodic Testing

In order to comply with the requirements of BS 8411 Code of Practice for Safety Nets on construction sites and other works, FASET council have agreed to implement the following measures as best practice on the recommendation of the safety committee:

Tagging of safety net repairs
Repairs carried out on all new safety nets purchased from 01/01/2008 shall be tagged to confirm that the net has been repaired by a competent person. The tag must contain the following as a minimum:

  • Name or identification number of person carrying out the repair
  • Date of repair

It will not be a requirement to retrospectively tag safety nets repaired that are in service prior to 01/01/2008.

Periodic tests
All fall arrest safety nets supplied to site from 01/01/2008 that are more than 12 months old must have a test tag attached to the net to verify that it has been tested within the last twelve months and it continues to meet the manufacturers minimum test criteria for use. This test tag should contain the following as a minimum:

  • Date of last test
  • Net number

There must also be a corresponding test certificate that gives greater detail, and this should be available on request.

Record keeping
The installer should keep comprehensive records of the nets certification, when the nets are delivered to site, and the results of the formal examination for each net.
